10 Things Fans Forget About Lance Storm In WCW
Ava Richardson Lance Storm made a sudden impact in WCW on his arrival in 2000 during a difficult year for the promotion. Storm was a fresh face amongst the crowd, arriving with some notoriety from ECW and skills in the ring. The company immediately pushed him to the stratosphere to create a new player.

Storm was in the promotion for less than a year but accomplished a great deal, perhaps even more in this short time, than his four-year spell in the WWE. Lance will be recalled as a bright spot during some darker days for WCW and goes down in history as the only wrestler to have accomplished the outstanding feat of winning three belts simultaneously in the promotion.
10 Leaving ECW for WCW
Lance chose to leave ECW after a solid run from 1997-2000 and making a name for himself, before teaming up with WCW in June 2000. Arriving from the crowd by disturbing a triple tag team involving "Three Count" wearing jeans and a white shirt he performed a suicide dive with a forward roll over the top rope.
Lance escaped back into the crowd as quickly as he arrived and was audibly described as "working for another wrestling organization mere weeks ago". This heightened his ties with ECW, giving him an immediate edge and notoriety. His first match was the next week on Nitro defeating Disco Inferno, going after individuals that made a mockery of wrestling.
9 Triple Championship Winner
Lance entered the US Title Tournament on Nitro in July and won the belt in one night defeating Buff Bagwell, Shane Douglas and Mike Awesome in the final to acquire his first singles gold in the company just a month after his debut. He did not stop there, as the following week, he obtained the Hardcore title from Big Vito, then lastly the Cruiserweight Championship from Lt. Loco on an unprecedented winning spree.
Storm is the first and only wrestler to ever hold three singles championships in WCW simultaneously. These titles, were renamed the Canadian Heavyweight Championship, 100KG and Under Championship and Saskatchewan (A province in Canada) Hardcore International Title, to play off Lance's emerging Canadian heel gimmick.
8 World Heavyweight Title Matches with Booker T
Being placed in a prominent position so early in his WCW run was a huge benefit for Lance. He received his first World Title match against Booker T in early August 2000. Wearing his three belts to the ring, it was time for Lance "to fulfill his destiny", to become the first-ever "Grand Slam Champion" and head to the next PPV in Canada with all the gold.
The ending went down when Booker T was in the Canadian Maple Leaf, but was the first person to pull out of the move, getting to the ropes. A missile dropkick from the Champion, then a Book-End cost Lance lost his first match in WCW, being so close to winning it all.
7 New Blood Rising Vancouver Screw-Job
New Blood Rising was in Vancouver, in a rare foray for WCW into the Canadian market. Arriving in a purple limo with maple leaf flags, and Canadian Secret Service agents, Storm was defending his Canadian Heavyweight Championship against Mike Awesome, receiving a long Goldberg-esque entrance with arena security.
With Jacques Rougeau as the second guest referee, the crowd went wild for their triple champion. Altering the rules to Storm's advantage as the match went on, the fix was in, even though Lance was beaten multiple times. Awesome was intentionally knocked down by Rougeau at the end to prevent him winning via ten count, as Lance retained. This was a screw-job finish that went way beyond Montreal.
6 Bret Hart Anoints Storm
After Bret's absence due to his concussion injury, he appeared at the end of New Blood Rising and Lance Storm was basically anointed his successor in the promotion by association with the in-ring legend. This was a huge boost in his home country as WCW hoped to transfer Hart's pedigree onto a next-generation star.

Lance had actually trained at the Hart Bros Wrestling Camp in Calgary becoming friends with other WCW alumnus, Chris Jericho, although the links to the Harts involved were tangible at best. Taking place in Canada, this gave native fans hope that Storm would emerge on the level of their beloved legend to cheer for in the years ahead.
5 Formation of Team Canada
On Nitro, one night after the PPV in a rematch with Awesome, Storm's new faction was further solidified. Carl Ouellet also of the Quebecers, and a young Elix Skipper, who were all Canadian nationals joined the group after interfering. Storm handed over the Hardcore Title and the Cruiserweight Title as rewards for backing him as their new leader.
Jim Duggan of the Misfits in Action later joined, betraying his country at Fall Brawl 2000, while he was the referee when Storm faced Hugh Morrus for his Canadian Heavyweight Belt. Major Gunns was forced to join also against her will, as Storm got embroiled with this antagonist group for way too long. It looked like WCW were trying to recreate the Hart Foundation angle from WWE in 1997, with Storm as the new figurehead to even casual fans.
4 End of Canadian Heavyweight Run
Lance continued to feud with Hugh Morrus of the Misfits in Action, a group that was notorious for collecting wrestlers that were "not able to get over". Lance lost the title at Halloween Havoc in a handicap match after Hacksaw his partner was pinned. He then won it back in London on Nitro, once Major Gunns threw in the towel and betrayed the Misfits, rejoining Team Canada again. Storm relinquished it for good at Mayhem again to Morrus.
This feud was a step back for Lance, after his initial highs as he deserved a better opponent. Fortunately he got involved in the World Title scene again and was in the tournament in December, defeating Mysterio in the first round but losing to Jarrett in the next. Regaining some credibility, he moved onto a new feud at last against a previous foe.
3 Penalty Box Match at Sin PPV
The "Penalty Box Match" was a unique stipulation, if anybody broke the rules they were ejected for one minute and placed in a cage similar to the Elimination Chamber. Storm, Awesome and Skipper faced Rey Mysterio, Konnan and Kidman of The Filthy Animals, going back to Storm's rivalry on his arrival to WCW where they dressed up as him.
Awesome had joined Team Canada and Duggan had been ejected from the team at Starrcade, but was the referee in this match. Team Canada eventually got the win with Storm making Kidman tap, using the Maple Leaf, after multiple wrestlers were sent to the penalty box giving an opening.
2 Ernest Miller Feud
This feud ran for about five months in total. They met in August on Thunder for the Commissioner status which Lance lost, and this stipulation was on the line again at Superbrawl Revenge nearly five months later.
A match at Starrcade was sandwiched in the middle that Storm won, and even held the WCW Commissionership after defeating Miller on Nitro the week before the PPV. This was one of Storm's last major feuds in WCW, and he should have been facing more varied opponents during this period.
1 Pursuit of Tag Titles with Mike Awesome
In the final months of WCW, Mike Awesome and Lance tagged together in pursuit of the titles after the rest of Team Canada disintegrated. They wrestled to success on the final WCW PPV Greed against Konnan and Hugh Morrus, and the Final Nitro for the titles against Chuck Palumbo and Sean O'Haire, on the losing side.

Lance's contract was taken up by WWE as they saw potential in the young Canadian, with his impressive start and mat skills in the ring. Despite a few title victories and the reusing of his Canadian gimmick with the Un-Americans, Lance retired early in 2005, opening his own Wrestling Academy then working in developmental for WWE. He began eventually wrestling on the independent scenes again, and finally behind the scenes for the WWE.
