For a young racing driver, the dream starts with entering the F1 circuits and getting a chance to drive in F1. It ends with winning the world championship. Max Verstappen attained his dream at the age of 24 years. But do you ever wonder what went on behind the scenes?

Verstappen was the best driver in 2021. It’s his results that speak for themselves. The Flying Dutchman beat a 7-time world champion to the world title in a thrilling fashion.

But the battle wasn’t only on the tracks – there was stuff happening off them too. IWC had grabbed Lewis Hamilton while Tag Heuer, Red Bull’s sponsor since 2016, possibly couldn’t get the return on their investment as Mercedes dominated F1.

Things changed when Verstappen took home the title in 2021. What was even better for Tag Heuer was that the Dutchman saw the watch had a big part to play in his success.

He was asked, “So watches have been like milestones in your career. Do you attach memories to some of the watches in your collection from moments of your life?

Max answered, “Well, I think specially last year where I got gifted a Tag Heuer Monaco as well and for me, that was a bit of a lucky charm I guess throughout the year. So I’ve basically worn it for the rest of the season in F1, so that was a nice one. Something I will remember.”

The watch is a modern version of the original Monaco launched in 1969. It is made with lightweight titanium. He wore the $6,300 masterpiece during his celebrations after his win at Abu Dhabi as well. Superstitions among sports stars are a common sight. It is not a big shocker that Max finds his winning watch a lucky charm for him.

Why does Max Verstappen depend on centuries-old technology?

The interviewer asked an interesting question, “Why do we wear watches with technologies from the 17th century? Why do we still wear these things? We have got better options!”

To this Verstappen answered, “I don’t know if it’s better [modern watch technology], it’s just different. I like to look at a watch and it’s all about the shapes, and the feeling of actually wearing something, having a bit of weight around your wrist as well.”

“Always you can look at your phone and see the time but that’s boring. Why do you wear bracelets or necklaces, or you know what I mean? Same thing.”
