AEW Dynamite Ratings After Full Gear Continue A Concerning Trend
Matthew Harrington Highlights
- AEW Dynamite's ratings for November 22 were up 3% from the previous week, but it was the worst in the coveted 18-49 demographic since October 25.
- The opening quarter-hour of Dynamite, featuring Swerve Strickland vs. Jay Lethal, was the most-watched segment of the night with 971,000 viewers.
- Viewership steadily declined throughout the night, with almost 200,000 people tuning out by the end. AEW needs to address this trend.
This year's AEW Full Gear was a big show, with an insane match between Swerve Strickland and "Hangman" Adam Page, and an overbooked but still fun main event that saw MJF successfully defend his AEW World Championship against Jay White. So how would the November 22 Dynamite from the Wintrust Arena in Chicago build on that buzz?
According to Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics, AEW Dynamite's ratings for last week (which were delayed due to the Thanksgiving holiday), were up 3% to an 845,000 viewer average, which is 22,000 more than the 823,000 who tuned in the week before. The good news is that this is the highest Dynamite rating since October 18, but the bad news is that it was the worst of the coveted 18-49 ratings since October 25. The November 22 Dynamite drew 337,000 viewers for a 0.26 P18-49 rating, which is surprisingly down 8% from the 0.28 of the week before.
Swerve Strickland Paid Tribute To Bray Wyatt At Full Gear
Bray Wyatt's legacy lives on with a tribute during the Swerve Strickland-Adam Page Texas Death match at Full Gear! What Was The Most Watched AEW Dynamite Segment?
The Thanksgiving Eve Dynamite set its rating high point with the opening quarter-hour according to Wrestlenomics, which saw Swerve Strickland take on Jay Lethal. 971,000 viewers tuned in for that match, and while the match ending, followed by the in ring promo between Adam Cole, MJF, and Samoa Joe (along with a cameo from the mysterious Devil) dipped down a bit to 948,000 viewers, this quarter-hour topped the night for the 18-49 rating, with 382,000 in that age range tuning in. There was a 9% dip, down to 862,000 for Jake Hager, Matt Menard, and Angelo Parker vs. Hook, Shibata, and Orange Cassidy.
Dynamite's ratings did a strong rebound for the angle with Christian Cage renaming Luchasaurus to Killswitch, followed by the arrival of Adam Copeland. For this, there was a 7% increase in viewership to 920,00. There was a huge 13% dip, with 121,000 tuning out for Rush vs Jay White, and then dropping more, to 746,000 for AEW Women's Champion Toni Storm's ramp promo, and the women's triple-threat match between Ruby Soho, Anna Jay, and Skye Blue. The conclusion of this match and the beginning of the main event between Jon Moxley and Mark Briscoe fell even further to 733,000 viewers. The end of the main event had an over run that ran until 10:07 pm, but shockingly, this was the least watched part of the night by far. Only 688,000 viewers stayed around, which means 45,000 decided to change the channel before it even ended. This was also the lowest rated 18-49 for Dynamite, with just 271,000 viewers in that age range watching.
The November 22 AEW Dynamite followed the trend of starting out strong, only for viewers to tune out in droves throughout the night. From the beginning to the end of Dynamite, almost 200,000 people decided they didn't want to watch the show all the way to the end. It's a trend AEW desperately needs to change.
