Andy Ruiz Jr. became an overnight star by beating Anthony Joshua in the summer of 2019. It is still considered the biggest upsets of the sport. Joshua is the brightest prospect of heavyweight boxing, and knocking him out took the ‘Destroyer’ to super stardom. Though Ruiz has had some handsome victories in the sport, he has also succumbed to a few disheartening losses.

Here, we look at all of his professional and amateur losses in boxing.

Andy Ruiz Jr. – Pro-boxing losses

Ruiz had an unbeaten streak in his professional boxing run until 2016. He confronted Joseph Parker for a vacant WBO heavyweight title fight and ended up on the losing side. Although he kept good composure throughout those 12 rounds, he scored 113, 113, and 114 on the judge’s scorecard. He lost the battle via majority decision to Parker.

Though the ‘Destroyer’ stood tall in his first bout against Joshua, he failed to carry the momentum into the next. Following his first win over the Britain, he got aligned for a rematch with him last year. The fight went 12 rounds and Joshua settled his scores with nemesis Ruiz in this rematch. ‘Destroyer’ ended up losing this fight via unanimous decision.

Andy Ruiz Jr. – Amateur boxing losses

Ruiz didn’t have an extensive amateur boxing career. He fought five times at this level and won three times.

In his very first fight against Michael Hunter, the ‘Destroyer’ failed to keep up with his speed and agility, resulting in an RSCO (Referee Stopped Contest – Outclassed) in round 3 of the four-round fight.

Ruiz backed himself up with a winning post his first amateur loss. But he once again fell prey to Mike Wilson in 2008 in a four-round fight in the heavyweight category, where Ruiz ended up losing.

Even after a few losses, Ruiz has shown a lionheart and has made astonishing comebacks. He has one of the strongest resumes in boxing. ‘Destroyer’ has established himself as a rugged contender in the heavyweights. He is now gearing up for his comeback in 2021 and has his eyes set on a much-anticipated trilogy with Joshua.
