Baldur's Gate 3 Full Release Aiming For 2022, Says Developer
James Austin Larian Studios confirms that Baldur's Gate 3 won't leave Early Access until 2022 at the earliest, as the game still needs more time.
It has been confirmed that Baldur's Gate 3 won't be released until 2022 at the earliest. The ambitious RPG is currently in Steam Early Access, and Baldur's Gate 3 has gotten several updates since its early release, adding new features and fixing technical hiccups according to player feedback.
The Early Access version of Baldur's Gate 3 contains the first of three planned acts. It initially launched with six playable classes for the main character, but a seventh has been added since launch, in the form of the new Druid class. The developers have also added Weighted Dice, which increases the RNG in the player's favor. That change came in response to player frustrations, with some irritated by how easily a playthrough could be derailed by a single failed skill check.
The Early Access version of Baldur's Gate 3 is notoriously glitchy (as is to be expected), so it's clear the game still requires a lot more work and time. Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios has been careful not to give a release date for Baldur's Gate 3, but fans now have a very loose release window. Larian founder Sven Vincke was interviewed by GameSpot (via PC Gamer), and he confirmed that Baldur's Gate 3 won't be released in 2021. Vincke says the developer is instead aiming for 2022, but even that isn't a full commitment on Larian's part for now.
Baldur's Gate 3 will continue to receive updates to its current early build. Vincke confirmed that the next update won't add any major content, but it will change a lot about how the game currently functions. He specifically singled out the Fighter class as something that has received a lot of player feedback, as its range of actions is severely limited compared to the other classes in the game. Boring human fighter builds are common in D& D, but it doesn't work as well in a video game format.
The Early Access version of Baldur's Gate 3 shows a lot of potential, but it's clear that the game is a long way off from being ready. The addition of the Druid class was a great incentive for players who picked it up at launch to return and see how things have changed, but the final product is more important. Fans of the Baldur's Gate series have waited a long time since the release of Throne of Bhaal for more content, and it looks like the wait will go on a little longer. It will be worth it if it results in a more polished Baldur's Gate 3 at launch.
