Becky Lynch is perhaps the biggest star in women's wrestling history. Not only that, she outranks most superstars in both men's and women's divisions when it comes to star power. The Man has made history several times in WWE with her incredible achievements. She recently added more gold to her championship portfolio when she won the women's tag team championships on Raw alongside her tag team partner Lita. However, most people do not remember that Becky's start in WWE was less than epic. In fact, her original character in NXT was an utter failure.

If one saw Becky Lynch's early career trajectory it was clear that while WWE did make her a part of big matches, she was never pushed as a main event star. Even though she was part of the famous four horsewomen of WWE and the inaugural SmackDown Women's Champion, the company never booked her like a star. But the fans were subdued by her charm and never stopped supporting her, and at SummerSlam 2018 the fans got what they wanted as Becky Lynch took the spotlight by force. After that, she was unstoppable as she became The Man of the people.

Becky Lynch Had An Awful Irish Dancing Gimmick In NXT

The Man had to climb a lot of hurdles to achieve the level of greatness she enjoys now. One of the biggest challenges Becky faced was when she broke into WWE NXT in 2014. Her first real character was based on her nationality. Becky is from Dublin, Ireland and hence WWE thought that her playing an extremely stereotypical Irish character would entertain the fans. Hence, the Irish Dancer version of Becky Lynch was born. And it was absolutely awful.

The gimmick involved her doing a traditional Irish river dance while making her entrance. She looked very awkward when she used to perform it, leaving fans legitimately puzzled. Perhaps the most cringeworthy sight was that she even used to dance throughout her matches. It was almost impossible for any fans to take her seriously as a performer when she was booked to look like a joke. And even Becky felt so as she revealed in WWE Network's "Becky Lynch: Straight Fire," series. "For me, it was just wanting to be in there so bad, and thinking, 'Oh, well, I'm Irish. Let's not ignore the fact'... But of course, we didn't have to display the fact."

Years later, after becoming one of the biggest stars in the wrestling industry, Becky Lynch reflected on her journey as she reiterated her disgust at her initial Irish Dancer gimmick. In June 2022, Big Time Becks took to her Twitter to express her thoughts on the same. "8 years ago I had possibly the most shameful debut in NXT/ WWE history. Today I have accomplished nearly everything I could have ever dreamed of. And tonight I will main event like I always do at #wwehidalgo. Where you’ve been doesn’t have to indicate where you’ll go." The Man clearly made the right choices as now she is undeniably the biggest star in the women's division.

Becky Lynch's Success In WWE Has Lifted Up Those Around Her

When it comes to success in the business, no one has done it like Becky Lynch. She broke down barriers and competed as a star not only against the women in the company but also the men. Only a few current stars from both divisions can be said to be at her level of stardom. But what is even more impressive is that Becky by no means is the greatest in-ring athlete. While her matches are absolutely excellent, she does not rely on high-risk, eye-catching, and athletic moves too often. However, what still makes her so successful is her commitment to the product and unmatched storytelling ability. Almost all her big matches were more about the story than athleticism, and she is a remarkable storyteller.

Lynch has now achieved a level of stardom that not only elevates all her feuds but also elevates the talent she works with. In the past few years, she has put the spotlight on several stars including the likes of Bianca Belair, Liv Morgan, and Damage CTRL. And with her recent championship win, it looks like The Man is ready to create history again.
