Kiwi comedian and actor Jemaine Clement has lobbed an insult at Donald Trump and the US in an unusual transpacific exchange involving our voting mascot Orange Guy.

American comedian Paul F. Tompkins tweeted a picture of Orange Guy, the NZ Electoral Commission's voting mascot.

He captioned it: "HEY REST OF THE WORLD: Did you know that New Zealand has a weird citrus golem as a voting mascot?"

Clement took the bait, and responded: "You have a weird citrus golem as a president."

"HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THAT" Tompkins replied.

Commenters below discussed the best way to describe Clement's incisive response.
