Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship

The fellow will be exposed to both reconstructive and cosmetic cases. Cosmetic rhinoplasty, aging face surgery and injectables are also well represented.

Operating Privileges

Fellow will function as a clinical instructor in the Department of Otolaryngology with full clinical privileges at University of Kansas Hospital, Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, Truman Medical Center, KU MedWest ASC, and Kansas City Veteran's Administration Medical Center

Operative Experience

The fellow's operative experience will expose them to the full spectrum of Facial Plastic Surgery while working with Drs. David Kriet, Clint Humphrey, and John Flynn. They will have graduated responsibility when operating alongside the co-directors. In the ASC setting at KU MedWest, the fellow will be exposed to primarily aging face surgery, rhinoplasty, and otoplasty.

The University of Kansas Hospital experience will include facial trauma repair, facial paralysis rehabilitation, Mohs reconstruction, and microtia repair. The fellow will autonomously see and perform surgery on patients at Truman Medical Center.

Research

The Fellow will participate with the co-directors, residents, and research staff in biweekly facial plastics research meetings. The facial plastics division typically has multiple ongoing clinical research endeavors. The fellow is expected to complete and publish at least one research project.

Teaching Responsibilities

The Fellow is responsible for giving one to three didactic lectures to the residents as well as leading monthly Facial Plastics Case Conferences with a co-director. The Fellow serves as junior faculty and is responsible for teaching residents in the OR and clinical setting.

Case Load

The Fellow's case load averages 7-10 cases a week.

Call Responsibilities

The Fellow will be placed in the attending call schedule to cover general ENT and maxillofacial trauma. This is typically two (2) weeks per six (6) month period or four (4) weeks per year.

We view the Fellow as a partner in our facial plastics division during the fellowship:

The fellow will work alongside both co-directors with increasing autonomy in both the clinic and operating room.
The fellow will have the opportunity to see his or her own patients in the ambulatory facial plastics clinic in a half-day clinic on Friday afternoon each week.
New cosmetic patients will be seen independently by the fellow in this clinic including many patients requesting cosmetic injectable treatments prior to the weekend.
The fellow also has the opportunity to book cosmetic surgeries from this clinic at a reduced rate at the KU MedWest ASC.

Our fellowship offers a robust experience in both cosmetic and reconstructive facial plastic surgery. The combined annual case volume in key areas for the co-directors includes 300+ rhinoplasties with 20 to 40 rib grafts, 30 to 40 facelifts, 40+ forehead flap nasal reconstructions, 10 to 20 ZMC repairs, 10 to 20 mandible repairs, 2 to 5 masseteric to facial nerve transfers, and 2 to 5 temporalis transfers.

Weekly Schedule

The Fellow will spend 3-4 days a week in the operating room and 1-2 days in clinic. The fellow will run an independent afternoon clinic at our KU MedWest site each Friday. The fellow's schedule has been constructed such that patients undergoing surgery will be seen the following week to enable continuity of care.

On two days each month at Truman Medical Center, the Fellow will either evaluate patients pre and postoperatively in the clinic or perform surgeries autonomously while supervising a junior resident on the service.

Requirements for Appointment

Eligible applicants must have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited Otolaryngology residency training program, must be American Board certified/eligible, and must be able to obtain a Kansas and Missouri medical license.
