The Leviathans have long been extinct by the time Link awakens in Breath of the Wild, but taking pictures of their bones can earn him a big reward.

“The Leviathan Bones” is one of the many side quests in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild that requires a bit of exploration to complete. At the Serenne Stable, there are three brothers discussing their theories about the ancient Leviathans and how they may have gone extinct. Onya believes that they went extinct as a result of an ice age, Akhrah believes that it was a volcanic eruption, and Garshon believes it was the result of a massive drought. Unfortunately, since they haven’t managed to locate any of the Leviathan remains, their research remains inconclusive, and they’ll ask Link to bring them pictures of the bones.

However, the brothers do have some idea of where the bones might be and point Link towards the Eldin Mountains, Hebra region, and Gerudo region to get him moving in the right direction. While Breath of the Wild's Leviathan bones are massive and hard to capture fully on the Sheikah Slate’s camera, the brothers will accept the photos as long as the Leviathan’s head is partially visible. As a reward, Garshon promises Link 300 Rupees, making this one of the best side quests to complete when players are in need of some extra cash.

If players have already reached these locations prior to accepting the quest, the locations of each Leviathan will be marked on the map as a “Great Skeleton,” making them very easy to track down again. However, if players have not found the remains yet, the skeletons are still big enough to see on Breath of the Wild's map of Hyrule, and players can zoom in and scan the three regions to find their locations. Unfortunately, one of the skeletons is hidden in a cave and is impossible to see from above, so Link will need to do a bit of exploring in order to find all three of the Leviathan bones.

How To Complete The Leviathan Bones Quest BOTW

The Eldin Mountain Leviathan can be found at the northernmost point of the Eldin region in the East Deplian Badlands. The easiest way to reach this area is from the Gorae Torr Shrine atop of Gut Check Rock, which is located in the small watery area just north of Breath of the Wild’s Death Mountain. There are a few monsters lurking around Eldin’s Flank, but the Leviathan bones can be easily spotted from a distance, and once Link gets close enough to take a picture, the Sheikah Slate’s camera will register this part of the quest as complete.

In the Gerudo region, the Leviathan skeleton is located in the bottom left corner of the map, deep in the Gerudo desert. Reaching this area can be a bit tricky since the Gerudo desert is difficult to navigate with its inconsistent climate and deep sands, but Link can catch or rent a Sand Seal at Gerudo Town to make the journey much faster and easier. Once Breath of the Wild players have snapped the photo of the Leviathan bones, they’ll also find a Shrine and a Great Fairy Fountain located inside of its ribcage.

Unlike the other skeletons, the Hebra region’s Leviathan bones are located underground in a frozen cavern. East of the Hebra North Summit, there’s a small square of water on the map that’s extremely close to the cave’s entrance, which is blocked by a large stone door. Up the hill, players will find a massive snowball that they can push down the hill to break the door down, but to get the snowball to reach the door, they’ll have to use Breath of the Wild’s Cryonis rune on the water to create a platform for it to roll over. Once the door is open, the Leviathan bones can be found just inside, along with the ancient Shrine that sits just beneath it. Once all three Leviathan skeletons have been photographed, Link can return to the Serenne Stable to show his pictures to each of the brothers to claim their 300 Rupee reward.
