Is It Happening? Cast, Story & Everything We Know
Emma Powell Nimona's ending leaves room for a sequel. Will it actually happen? Here's everything we know so far about Nimona 2, including when it will release.
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Nimona
Nimona wraps up its central story, but it certainly leaves room for a sequel if the filmmakers decided to go that route. Adapted from the 2015 graphic novel by ND Stevenson, Nimona, directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, ends with the titular shape-shifter sacrificing herself to save the kingdom and Ballister. Presumed dead, Nimona presumably reappears to Ballister, paving the way for a potential sequel.
Nimona received rave reviews from critics, and currently has a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes from 65 reviews, and a 94 percent audience score. The animated feature film, which was originally under Disney’s Blue Sky Banner before the studio canceled production, and it moved to Annapurna and Netflix, explores themes of identity, acceptance, power, and gender fluidity, among others. Nimona’s ending closed out its story, but the door is left ajar should a sequel to the animated film get the green light. While there’s hope for a sequel (and plenty of story avenues), there are several factors that must be taken into consideration before another film can move forward.
Nimona 2 Is Not Confirmed
As of this writing, there are no official plans to go ahead with Nimona 2. The animated feature ended with Nimona’s return and, though her face isn’t shown, its conclusion is a happy one. Of course, that doesn’t mean Nimona can’t get a sequel. It would all depend on whether the filmmakers and Stevenson would want to make another story, and the animated film would also have to be considered a success by Netflix standards to warrant another film. Typically, Netflix announces sequels within a few months of a film’s release, but animation is a bit trickier when it comes to the streamer.
Historically, Netflix has not made sequels to any of the films in its animated slate. The one exception is The Sea Beast, which was released in June 2022. However, the streamer didn’t announce it would be getting a sequel until January 2023. The Sea Beast spent several weeks in Netflix’s Global Weekly Top Ten Films list, which suggests that Nimona will have to spend just as many weeks in the top ten for the streamer to green light a sequel. With positive buzz, a great story, and a fantastic critical reception, Nimona has the tools to get a sequel.
Nimona 2 Release Date Info
If Nimona 2 is given the green light by the end of 2023, it’s possible it will be released on Netflix at some point near the end of 2025, at the earliest. Not only would the sequel need to get the official go ahead from the streamer, but there would need to be time for Stevenson and the filmmakers to come up with a new story idea. The animation team would also need time to bring the story to life. All told, audiences should expect to wait a while should Nimona get a sequel.
Nimona 2 Cast
With no direct follow-up to Nimona’s original story, the characters who didn’t die in the animated film would likely return for a sequel. That includes Riz Ahmed as Ballister Blackheart, Chloë Grace Moretz as Nimona, and Eugene Lee Yang as Ambrosius Goldenlion. With both The Director and Queen Valerin having been killed, it’s possible Nimona 2 would introduce new characters to replace them and further expand the medieval/modern kingdom. A sequel could also introduce characters from the source material who were removed in the film, including Dr. Meredith Blitzmeyer, who made a device that could stop Nimona from shape-shifting.
Nimona 2 Story Details
Nimona sacrificed herself to save the kingdom, but she returns in the end, revealing herself to Ballister. With The Director now dead and Nimona proclaimed a hero by the kingdom’s people, it’s possible Nimona 2 could follow the shape-shifter’s journey as she adjusts to being accepted. So much of the original animation is about belonging due to Nimona — and Ballister — being shunned by the kingdom, considered outcasts by society. The fact that Nimona’s ending didn’t show her also suggests that she might have taken a new form, which could also play into the sequel’s story.
What’s more, The Director’s cannon obliterated the wall that separated the kingdom from Nimona’s world. Now that it’s gone, Nimona 2 can explore what’s there, and perhaps introduce a plethora of new characters that Nimona and Ballister can interact with. It’s also possible a sequel can expand on both Nimona and Ballister’s backstories, presenting them with new obstacles they must overcome following the events of Nimona. The first film proved that people could change, but there might be pushback from those who liked the way things were. That could be Nimona 2’s central story, giving Ballister and Nimona something to fight. The possibilities are endless.
