Minecraft's Enchantment Table Text Has Been Translated
Marcus Reynolds The mysterious writing used for Minecraft’s enchanting tables has finally been decoded, and its meaning could have a huge impact on the game's future.
The mysterious text used in Minecraft’s enchanting tables has finally been deciphered. A keen Minecraft fan has publicized a hidden discovery about the origins of the obscure lettering system that has confused gamers for years. The real shock is that the answer has been plain to see from the beginning.
The meaning behind the cryptic text in Minecraft’s enchanting tables has been a recurring subject of conversation since the block’s addition to the game in Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3. The enchanting table text is considered something of a meme in the Minecraft community, with many players relating the script to illegible English writing. Although many would ignore the writing in the book due to its irrelevance to Minecraft's core gameplay, some fans took it upon themselves to decipher the strange-looking characters.
A well-known Minecraft content creator named Camman18 posted an explanation of the mysterious calligraphy to his YouTube channel in a short TikTok-style video. The clip points out that the writing system actually comes from a 2001 side-scroller called Commander Keen, which is a game that Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson is known to be a fan of. Each character in the writing system is directly tied to a letter in the English alphabet, meaning that the writing in the enchanting tables can be deciphered to uncover coherent words. The writing system is formally called the “Standard Galactic Alphabet” and is a substitution cipher for the Latin alphabet. Although the Standard Galactic Alphabet is prevalent in the Minecraft enchanting tables, the actual meanings of the translations have almost nothing to do with the powerful Minecraft enchantments themselves. As Camman18 points out in his video, however, the Standard Galactic Alphabet doesn’t just appear in Minecraft, but also on the social media pages of one of the game’s developers.
Little notes with Standard Galactic text written on them have been spotted in the background of Minecraft developer Ulraf's Twitter image posts. These messages, first deciphered by YouTuber Rays Works, were shown to reveal information on upcoming Minecraft updates. One such example was a tweet from February 19, where a small note with Standard Galactic text could be seen in the corner of Ulraf’s photo. The text was translated to mean “allay unleashed,” which came just a day before the allay mob was added to the Minecraft beta-update version.
What was once seen as a silly, unimportant aspect of Minecraft could potentially be an intriguing way to find out about what is coming to the game. The history behind the Standard Galactic Alphabet is a nice little nod to a relatively forgotten game of the past, and may open up doors to new ways of referencing classic games while keeping the “mystery” element of Minecraft alive. Even though the code was cracked, it is only a matter of time before Mojang gives fans something else to uncover.
