The In Your House Concept Is What Started To Kill Wrestling PPVs
Matthew Harrington The In Your House PPV concept drastically changed the landscape of WWE in the mid-90s. WCW raised the stakes by adding more PPVs and inspired WWE to follow that plan beyond the original “big four” events. In Your House was the name used for the other events with various themes to differentiate them. The idea created excitement for WWE fans to have more shows to highlight Bret Hart, The Undertaker, and Shawn Michaels, but it also led to many negatives. Wrestling promotions asking fans to pay for a special event every single month is a hard sell, especially at a time when that was a new idea. Many of the issues to come up played a role in the PPV model taking a hit. WWE witnessed the In Your House PPVs helping kill the importance of PPVs.
There Were Too Many IYH Shows
WWE didn’t have the same product as WCW, so trying to compete with their business model was already a bad idea. In Your House PPVs instantly made it feel like too many shows for WWE. The roster just wasn’t there at a deeper level to have that many events per year.

WWE was already struggling to gain momentum during Diesel’s WWE Championship reign in 1995 when coming up with this concept. The product was not hot at the time, and it was a tough sell getting fans interested in the big four PPVs. In Your House just felt like a headache for WWE’s creative team and a hindrance to fans already buying WWE’s other shows and WCW’s PPVs if following both.
The goal of In Your House was to convince fans to invest more into the television product since it meant a big show at the end of every month. It just convinced the audience to be wary of buying shows since many of them felt forced. The buy rates for In Your Housenever matched the big four PPVs unless having a rare attraction.
They Had Lackluster Main Events
The biggest issue for In Your House was that the PPVs felt like a notch below the bigger shows. WWE had lackluster matches for the main events of the first few In Your House shows. Diesel having matches with Sycho Sid and Davey Boy Smith was not convincing fans to shell out the extra money.
WWE even tried a ridiculous concept of WWE Champion Diesel and Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels facing Tag Team Champions Yokozuna and Davey Boy Smith in a winner takes all match. The desperation just did not help change the perception of In Your House being a cheaper show not worth the money at the time.
There were some memorable moments throughout the years like classic Shawn Michaels matches, new concepts like the Buried Alive or Inferno matches, and even the introduction of the Hell in a Cell match. Even the cool moments and matches felt wasted and would be better suited on the bigger events. In Your House having lackluster appeals and weak matches on the card hurt the concept from day one.
They Ultimately Became Irrelevant
The end of the In Your House PPV model came as the Attitude Era took off and there was a need for more PPVs. Fans were willing to pay to see Steve Austin, The Rock, and Triple H continue their stories. WWE realized that coming up with new names like Unforgiven, No Mercy and Backlash provided better buy rates.
In Your House eventually became an irrelevant name that just conditioned fans to think it was a lesser show to the average PPV. WWE came up with an individual name for all twelve PPVs of the year and saved their backsides from the failing idea. However, the overall appeal of PPV never felt the same again with In Your House ruining the old school approach.
