The new year is almost here, and so is the next season of the PGA Tour! The Tour is coming back into action with the first event of the year, The Sentry 2024, which will take place from January 4 to January 7, 2024, at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Hawaii. The returning tournament is not the same as it has been so far, as it comes with a few noteworthy changes.

The year-opening event is set to be a thrilling one for the players and the fans, alike. The Sentry comes with some major changes in its format, name, and OWGR points this year, which probably makes it more exciting and competitive than before! 

1. The Sentry is now a no-cut event

The 36-hole cut format has been removed for four signature events from eight, and Sentry is one of them. For the first time in its history, the Hawaii event will be a no-cut event, meaning that all 59 players on the field will play all four rounds and have an equal chance to win the trophy.

The eight signature events will offer higher status, prize money, and OWGR points to the competing players. This season, the tournament will be more competitive and unpredictable, as every player will have to play their best golf for four days, and no one can afford to have a bad round.

2. The OWGR point allocation has changed

Another change that comes with the Sentry being a signature event is the OWGR point allocation. The OWGR points are important for many reasons, such as qualifying for majors and the Ryder Cup. The Sentry, as a signature event, will now award approximately 3-4 percent more OWGR points than before for the top finishers and will award no points for the last 15 percent finishers. This means that the Sentry will have a bigger impact on the world rankings, and the players will have more incentive to perform well.

3. The field is more inclusive and diverse

The third, and perhaps the most significant, change is the field of the Sentry. In the past, the Sentry was only open to players who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year. This made it an exclusive and elite event, but also a limited one. Many top players who did not win a tournament but had consistent and impressive results were left out.

This season, however, the Sentry has expanded its eligibility criteria to include not only the tournament winners but also the top 50 in last season’s FedExCup points standings. This means that the Sentry will have a more inclusive and diverse field, featuring players from different tours, countries, and backgrounds.
