Undertaker Explains Why The Deadman Character Will Never Be Revived In WWE
Emma Horne During an exclusive interview with Ariel Helwani, WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker took some time to reflect on his 30 years in WWE, including the end of 'The Streak', the importance of protecting the business, and discussed why fans will never see 'The Deadman' character again.
The interview took place just before he was set to one of his One Deadman Live shows and when asked why he was going this direction with his career and talking far more now than he ever did while in the WWE, The Undertaker responded it was because he'd been quiet for so long and kept the curtain closed on that side of the business. Now that things are out in the world, he's much more comfortable talking and he noted it all kicked off with his Hall of Fame speech. During it, WWE realized he could actually talk and they figured they could get another 30 years out of him.
He spoke about his run in WWE, including his portrayal of The Undertaker 'The Deadman' character, and noted it has been put to bed. "When I lifted the curtain, when I pulled it back, that's gone." Helwani wanted to be clear that he was done with that character and Taker responded, "I won't bring the hat and coat back out." When Helwani asked, "Never?", Undertaker said, "Now that people know that I can talk and I have actual thoughts that aren't revolved around diggin' holes and taking souls, that character will live forever in our memory but I don't think that I can bring it back after The Last Ride, after the A&E Biography doing all these shows, I just don't think it works."
WWE Didn't Realize He Was Putting That Character To Rest
When Undertaker showed up on Raw to do his segment with Bray Wyatt, The Undertaker said WWE thought he was going to come out as the original old-school character. He had to let them know that the character was never coming back. He said Vince isn't a fan of The American Badass character because he loves the original Undertaker character so much.
