Emma Powell Your safety is important. KU Medical Center police officers are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and additional patrol officers are being hired prior to July 1, 2017, to increase their physical presence around campus.
Building concerns should be addressed on a structure-by-structure basis by the units responsible for each building. What is appropriate for one building may not be appropriate or possible for another. Please share your concerns and observations with your supervisor and contact KU Medical Center Police to better understand security measures that may already be in place.
Please take a moment to review personal safety actions you can take to be more aware of and in control of your surroundings. At KU Medical Center, there are a number of services aimed at increasing safety:
- KU Medical Center communication system with Rave text messaging and email, Alertus beacons and computer popups, and University broadcast alerts.
- Blue light emergency phones in the parking lots and on walkways throughout campus. Building Emergency Plans (BEPs). All KU Medical Center buildings have a BEP, a building advisory committee, and building emergency leaders. Evacuation drills are conducted annually.
- KU Medical Center Police or Emergency Management trainings and talks.
- Shuttle bus service is intended for transportation to and from the parking lots during hours of operation.
- Between the hours of 11 p.m. to 4 a.m., employees, students and visitors of the university can take advantage of escort services to and from residences, parking lots and garages within the boundaries of Chester to the north, State Line Road to the east, 43rd Street to the south, and Fisher to the west.
The Wichita campus offers a number of services to increase safety:
- Security camera coverage throughout campus
- Perimeter gate that is secured after-hours (accessible by KUSM-W proximity card)
- LED lighting throughout campus parking lots
- Escort to and from vehicles (Mon-Fri 6 AM-11 PM)
- Rave alert text messaging service
- Training on emergency preparedness and response
