What Do The Check Marks Mean On WhatsApp? Read Receipts Explained
Emma Powell WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging app, is used by billions worldwide. Here's what the different checkmarks mean when talking to your contacts.
WhatsApp is a popular instant messaging service used in several countries, and for a lot of people, it is the primary mode of communication between them and their family and friends. The Meta-owned app allows users to send images, videos and even voice messages to one another. However, when a message is sent to a contact, there is a checkmark on it which can differ depending on the recipient's status. Here is what each checkmark means.
As mentioned, the app is not only for messaging but allows users to make voice and video calls too. In some countries, it can also be used to send/receive money. WhatsApp also has tons of features built specifically for businesses, such as creating a catalog for their items complete with pictures and prices. Buyers can also add multiple items to a cart before messaging the company.
WhatsApp has three checkmarks when you send a message to a contact. The first is a single gray checkmark which appears if the message was successfully sent to the recipient. A double gray checkmark lets the sender know that the message, which can be a text, photo, video, or even a document, has been successfully delivered to the recipient. This can be their phone or any of their linked devices. The last checkmark is a double blue one, and when this appears on the sent message, it means it has been read or seen by the recipient. While the checkmarks are pretty straightforward, there are situations where things may be different.
When There's No Blue Check Mark
The way the checkmark occurs can be different when it is in a group chat. For example, the double gray checkmark will only be visible on a sent message when the message has been delivered to everyone in the group. In contrast, the double blue checkmark will appear when all the group's participants have seen or read the message. In a situation where either the sender or the recipient has turned off Read Receipts under the privacy settings, the double blue checkmark will not appear on a message even after it has been seen or read by the recipient.
Apart from the checkmarks, WhatsApp also has an option that provides more details about a sent message, such as what time it was delivered and the time it was read. First, press and hold down on the sent message to check these details. Then, select the overflow button at the top left corner (the vertically stacked dots) and select Info. A menu showing the time the message was delivered to the recipient and when it was seen or read should be visible. If the recipient has Read Receipts turned off, only the time the message was delivered will be visible.
