Rejoice! Corn Kid Tariq isn’t dead. He is safe and sound as he should have been.

So, how did the rumors about his death start? Well, it was after people came across a Twitter post with a headline that read: “7-year-old “corn kid” found dead last Sunday in a gang-related shooting.”

Upon close inspection, the photo even indicated that the news was published by the site NPR and penned by an author named Dustin Jones.

But obviously, the post was edited. The original news piece instead had a different headline about the famous kid behind the viral social media song. It read, “Meet South Dakota’s new corn-bassador, a boy who recently found out that corn is real.”

Corn Kid Tariq was just enjoying his grilled corn in the summer of 2022 when Julian Shapiro-Barnum, the host of Recess Therapy, approached him. The Youtuber then asked the little boy his opinion about corn, and to his delight, Tariq jumped into an elaborate explanation in his lovely voice why he loved this “big lump with knobs.”

The adorable footage, uploaded on YouTube on August 4, 2022 (which now has over 7 million views), instantly went viral. And the video further gained traction after The Gregory Brothers turned snippets from the interview into a song. 

Thus, the “Corn Kid” was born.

Thereafter, Tariq appeared in a television commercial for the Mexican fast food chain Chipotle and also attended the premiere of Pinocchio in Los Angeles. But the best thing was when he received the ultimate honor of South Dakota’s official “corn-bassador” by Gov. Kristi Noem.

For those who don’t know, South Dakota is one of the top corn producers in the nation.

Besides this, Tariq was also invited by Drew Barrymore to appear on a food news segment on her show. There, Drew and her cohost Ross tasked Tariq with trying corn with different ingredients like Corn Soda (which got an honest thumbs down), Nutella-covered corn topped with sprinkles (which got messy), Baby Corn (which tasted like “rainwater and carrots,”) and Quorn’s meatless nugget (which finally got a thumbs up).

At the close of the segment, Drew also wanted to make sure Tariq had a “corntastic day” and surprised him with a year’s supply of Quorn’s meatless products and a $5,000 toy shopping spree at FAO Schwarz.

Did you know: The Gregory Brothers partnered with Tariq to launch the “It’s Corn” song. They shared that all the proceeds were being split with Tariq’s family.

A few might have alleged Corn Kid Tariq’s parents for exploiting their child. But according to Tariq’s mother, Jessica, they just wanted a semblance of normalcy, safety, and fun for their child while he runs out his fame clock.

She added, “Before it was really getting to me because people were saying really mean stuff like, ‘He’s being exploited,’ ‘He’s being forced to do these things.’ But anyone that knows Tariq knows he loves the camera. He loves to talk. And this is something he always wanted.”

Plus, to avoid repetitive hurtful situations, she didn’t read the negative comment at all.

Recalling the moment, Jessica realized her child had gone viral, she shared, “I got a message with a video from Europe and they’re like, ‘Isn’t this Tariq?’ They’re like, ‘He’s on TikTok!’ And then I realized that ‘Oh, my God, my son is all over the internet.”

So, after bookers from television shows started reaching out, Tariq’s partner quickly found a lawyer and let him handle the administrative part.

As for Tariq’s siblings, he has two older sisters.
