The card for the Royal Rumble 2022 show has taken clear shape in recent weeks, with most of the matches announced so far. Although there isn’t a Smackdown Women’s Title match at the show this year, with champion Charlotte Flair entering the Rumble match itself, there is a scheduled Raw Women’s Championship contest. The reigning champion, Becky Lynch, is set to face Doudrop in what will be her very first televised championship match – and there may be no better choice for this spot at the Rumble event.

WWE Has Often Experimented With World Title Matches At The Rumble

The Royal Rumble PPV has had a history of great world title matches, with some unlikely challengers at times. With the true draw of the event being the Royal Rumble match itself, WWE has experimented now and again with their world title matches, trying out new and unproven names in the title scene. Over the years, this has seen the likes of Hardcore Holly, Scott Steiner, and Mr. Kennedy get a taste of fighting for the top belts against legit main eventers.

In addition, great matches such as Brock Lesnar vs Finn Balor fighting back and forth in a hard-hitting sprint for the Universal Championship in 2019, and one of the better Last Man Standing matches in history took place in 2007, with John Cena and Umaga waging war, have both taken place at the event. On occasion, this can even prompt the beginning of an ascension up the card, with the likes of Jeff Hardy hugely benefiting from challenging for the WWE Title in 2008.

There Aren’t Too Many Options On The Raw Roster

Since the draft, Becky Lynch has faced more or less the same few people on the Raw women’s roster, which is understandable considering how thin it currently is, with just over ten active full-time members on it. Looking at how the feud between her previous challenger Liv Morgan had developed over the last few months, with fans rallying behind Morgan as the weeks went on, it could have well been the plan to blow off their extended feud at the Rumble. However, during their title match at Day 1, the finished was evidently botched, with Morgan landing too far away from the ropes, with Lynch unable to cheat and use the ropes as leverage for the pinfall, meaning that the win was clean, with Morgan unable to claim for a rematch.

Bianca Belair looks to be a more likely opponent for WrestleMania, with their animosity building ever since Lynch returned to squash her at Summerslam, so keeping them apart is smart, so not to oversaturate their time together before a big blow-off to their rivalry. Other options could have come in the form of Rhea Ripley or Nikki A.S.H., but both their stocks have dropped significantly since their title reigns last year, with them being currently embroiled in a feud with one another anyway – which is something WWE television desperately needs, with women having proper rivalries built without the inclusion of a championship belt.

Doudrop Has A Big Chance At Breaking Out At The Royal Rumble

WWE has done a poor job in building up Doudrop since her main roster debut. A promising angle with Eva Marie was dropped very quickly, with it initially seeming like a long-term build into making her a babyface. The story was sped through, without much of a conclusion of push, with Marie being released quickly after. From there, Doudrop would compete in the poorly run Queen’s Crown Tournament, which featured incredibly short matches which didn’t properly showcase the talents of those involved. Without really giving her much of a chance to find her feet, WWE decided to turn her heel, which was a decision that was barely explained, but it at least gave her some new aggression.

However, the WWE Universe has yet to see the full capabilities of the former Piper Niven, with her best work being done before even being moved to the main roster, both on the independent scene and in NXT UK and even having some standout matches in the Mae Young Classic Tournament. This is all why a major championship match on a big four PPV event is the perfect place for Doudrop to show the world what she can do, and potentially breakout as a big star.

Lynch is a top performer with plenty of experience under the spotlight, so she is the perfect name to go toe-to-toe in helping someone in their first extended WWE PPV match, and helping it reach a certain standard. On the show, they will be able to likely have a longer match than they would have on Raw, with much more eyes firmly planted on them. Doudrop has a big chance at the Rumble to make her name known.
